My art education started early with public school teachers, PBS, museums, and my family. My heroes were Bob Ross, Dr. Seuss, Eric Carle, and Shel Silverstein.
I graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and got a bonus education from the art community in St. Louis many years later.
I've been fortunate enough to exhibit in D.C., Chicago, Boston, St. Louis, Sarasota, Florence, and across the San Francisco Bay Area.
If my hands are stained with paint you can bet I'm a happy camper.
I love learning stuff. I absorb, forget, remix, and repurpose everything. My abstractions kind of visualize that mental process. It is a piling on and whiting out of many layers of intentions, accidents, and discoveries. I can only hold on to the original context for so long until it is overtaken, informing what comes next or being completely smothered. At some point in the process the painting discovers itself.
Observational drawing and painting is the opposite of my abstract work. I'm trying to get at something specific; there is a right and a wrong. I need to practice, "check my math", correct, and repeat. I love the challenge.
Mad love to Betsy Ruprecht who taught me about translating 3D to 2D.
